How Floral Prices Are Shaping Budgets in Brisbane & the Gold Coast

At Stem Design, we’ve seen firsthand how flower prices in Australia have shifted over the past few years — and how that’s influencing weddings and events across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. From rising import costs to seasonal trends and climate impacts, floral budgets are changing. Here’s what couples and event planners need to know when designing their dream florals in 2025. Here’s what you need to know about: THE CHANGING COST OF WEDDING & EVENT FLOWERS

WHAT’S DRIVING PRICE CHANGES?

A mix of global supply chain issues, extreme weather events, and fuel costs have caused some flowers to skyrocket in price, while others have remained stable or even dropped. Locally grown blooms are becoming more sought after as imported flowers become less predictable and more expensive.

FLOWERS THAT HAVE GONE UP THE MOST

Peonies: Always a bridal favourite, but their short season and limited local supply mean prices have surged, especially for off-season weddings.
Roses: Particularly imported roses, have increased in cost due to freight and international demand.
Orchids: Especially premium varieties like phalaenopsis, have seen a sharp rise due to high demand and slower production.
Tulips: These have become more expensive in recent years, particularly out of season, due to their fragile nature and transport challenges.

FLOWERS THAT HAVE GONE DOWN OR REMAINED STABLE

Chrysanthemums: Once seen as old-fashioned, these have made a comeback and are now more affordable than ever.
Natives (Proteas, Banksias, Eucalyptus): Locally grown and hardy, native flowers offer great value and a bold aesthetic, with stable pricing thanks to strong Australian production.
Carnations: These have had a glow-up in the design world and remain budget-friendly with long vase life and beautiful colours.
Lisianthus: A great rose alternative, lisianthus have stayed reasonably priced and are grown widely in Queensland.

HOW COUPLES ARE ADJUSTING THEIR BUDGETS

Many couples are still prioritising flowers as a key design element but are being more strategic about where they spend. For example, smaller bridal party bouquets and fewer guest table arrangements are trending, while big-impact ceremony installs and photo-backdrop florals are getting more of the budget.

We’re also seeing a rise in seasonal and sustainable floristry, where flexibility on flower types allows for the best blooms at the best price. Mixed textures, bold colour palettes, and more foliage are all ways to stretch your floral investment.
